PRODUCTION UPDATE

An army of Barbarians!
An army of Barbarians!

More and more pewter figures and items are arriving from the caster each week. Many figures are already cast, and lots of things from the weapons & items series are ready to go. We are dividing, sorting, QA-ing, and bagging things as they arrive to us in preparation for…

SHIPPING SOON!

Soon after the surveys are locked down, we hope to begin shipping at the end of March or the beginning of April. We're still awaiting lots of things from our caster, and since many backers are in the Legendary tier, we will need ALL of the pieces before we can send the bulk of the orders out, but we hope to get the ball rolling in a few weeks. Then, we'll ship out everything as fast as we can, as it arrives to us from the caster.

We will be shipping via USPS and we'll have more information about that process in the March update.

Thanks! We appreciate your patience as we get closer to shipping. We're super excited to get these packed up and shipped out into your hands!

January Update!

PRODUCTION UPDATE

Things are moving along with more 3D printed masters arriving, more molds being finalized, and more items and figures being cast. We've also sorted and bagged most of the steel rods and magnets, and we're working to have all the other pieces in place so that we can start shipping as soon as we have everything we need from the caster. There's lots to make (~14,000 figures and ~180,000 accessories!) so we're a little bit at the mercy of the caster but as we receive the pieces we will group them into series and start organizing our shipping operation!

OUR PROCESS

We thought we'd use this update to talk a little bit more about our process in designing and making the Hand of Glory line.

3D Modeling

We use a few different 3D modeling programs to model the HoG figures and accessories, but we mostly use Zbrush and Rhino. Since the pieces require precision, and since some are organic shapes and others are rigid items, we need the combination of sculpting (Zbrush) and surface modeling (Rhino). Everything has to be modeled with 3D printing and spin casting in mind.

3D Printing

The two of us met while working for a 3D printing company, and we use a 3D scanning and 3D printing process for our other company, Fire & Bone, so making things with these technologies is our expertise.

As many of you know, desktop 3D printers are not detailed enough to be used for manufacturing purposes, so we use services that use very expensive printers to print in very high detail in wax, which is then cast in metal, and then cast again (and sometimes again and again) for spin casting in pewter. We do use desktop 3D printers for prototypes and for creating jigs to help us with sorting and packaging, like with these measuring cups and trays used to help dose the tiny steel plugs.

Casting

We discussed spin casting a bit more in depth in a previous update, but once we have the 3D printed masters, they are sent to the caster to be molded. Some things are then duplicated in small batches of 10 - 15, and sent back to us to inspect and clean up so a larger mold can be made.

Other Tasks

Beyond 3D modeling and making the figures and accessories, some other tasks include; creating graphic designs; designing and sourcing packaging; sorting and packing magnets, steel rods, and bases; sorting and packing weapons and items into series; and compiling everything together for shipping. We're doing all of this in-house ourselves, and while not as fun as modeling and making the figures and items, we still enjoy creating systems to stay organized and efficient, and ultimately the best part of making a new thing in getting it into your hands :)

BEYOND

Right now we're concentrating on getting everything in place to get everyone their rewards, and we're also discussing the future of HoG. We're taking all the suggestions we got from the surveys and strategizing on what's next, so stay tuned!

SURVEYS

We'll be locking down surveys and charging credit cards sometime in February or March, so if you need to adjust your order or your shipping address, you have a month or so. We'll definitely post another update before we do this. If you want to review or update your survey, head to the link below and input your email address:

CASTING UPDATE

First Batch!

Good news! We've received the first small run of production parts from our caster, and everything is looking great. There were a few minor tweaks that will need to be made as we ramp up production, mostly involving tiny adjustments to make sure that the holes for the steel plugs and magnets remain intact during the casting process.

These adjustments are something we anticipated would come up during this test, so now we can apply what we learned from this mini-run to the rest of the pieces. Over the next few months we'll be ramping up production, and in the meantime we'll continue to organize and package all of the other elements.

Caster

As you can imagine, when working with this many different tiny detailed pieces, it's extremely important to have good communication with the manufacturer. We're very fortunate to be working with our casting partner. They've been super helpful along the way and we were able to visit their facility a few weeks ago, which makes everything easier when we can give and receive direct feedback.

THIS AND THAT

Ranger

Here's the first look at the Ranger figure! During the campaign he wasn't finalized yet, so we just showed renders, but here he is as a bronze 3D print, ready for molding.

The BackerKit surveys are out the door! If you haven't already, you should be receiving a survey email soon, so keep an eye out.

The survey will provide you with options for selecting which rewards you want based on your pledge amount and ask for your shipping address. It will also give you the opportunity to increase your pledge amount to add additional items to your order, if you choose.

*A note about BackerKit:

When you input payment for shipping and add-ons, BackerKit collects your payment info, but you will not be charged until closer to the estimated shipping date (which is March).
